Wayne Rooney fired United into a deserved lead from 25 yards just before the half-hour, but David Luiz's first Chelsea goal on 54 minutes brought the scores level before Frank Lampard lashed home from the penalty spot to complete the comeback 10 minutes from time after Yuri Zhirkov was tripped by Chris Smalling.
United captain Nemanja Vidic was sent off for a second yellow card deep into stoppage time and will miss the weekend's trip to Liverpool.
